Neighborhood and Density

In this project, the main goal was to design a neighborhood suitable the placement of 6-18 tiny homes. Choosing one of two sites, I choose a plot of land in Levittown and developed a plan and justification for the selection of this site.

A tiny home is defined as a house that is 400 square feet or less. The homes will house one or two persons. The homes will be reserved for military veterans who have been homeless as a permanent residence. The home should provide the basic needs of shelter and comfort, while, to the greatest extent possible, promoting one's sense of place among the community of which it is a part.

NEEDS:
- Sleeping Space
- Living Space
- Cooking Space
- Bathroom Space including sink, shower, and toilet at a minimum ADA approved size
- Spaces to accommodate storage needs

CONSIDERATIONS:
- Access to public transit to NCMC or pick-up/drop-off by Uber or Lyft or taxi.
- Outdoor gathering space for residents as a focal point for house placement.
- US Postal Service development standards for mailboxes can be used.

- Refuse collection from a central point; the dumpster must be screened.

SITE:
- 30% of the site area must be allocated to access and parking.
- 10% of the site area must be allocated to an outdoor sitting area.
- The property setbacks for the entire site are: front yard: 25-feet; back yard: 15-feet; side yards: 5-feet
-
The total coverage of all unit cannot exceed 30% of the total site area.

Concepts

Hand Drawing:

I drew up a concept of the ideas that I wanted and get an idea of how I should use the space and what materials I should use. I went for a triangle design because I thought it would be an interesting concept.

AutoCAD Drawing:

Once I started to design the house in AutoCAD, I realized that for the needs of this house and only having 400 sq ft for each home, a triangle will be hard to work with. Even with a dog house window to open up the space on the second floor, the spaces were still to small.
